The Challenge
Today’s youth are bombarded with expanding sources of information. The Internet has brought the world to them at a click of the mouse. It’s a valuable educational tool when it delivers valid information. Unfortunately, both accurate and inaccurate information travels through cyberspace and it’s difficult for youth to discern the difference. But, it’s important that they do – especially when it comes to life-threatening choices, like those concerning substance abuse.
Program Goal
- Students learn how and where to find accurate information on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on the internet and discover the harmful effects of substance abuse.
- Students learn of local resources to turn to of they have an alcohol, tobacco or other drug concerns or questions.
- Students learn the importance of making positive life choices
Our Solution
“It's Time to Make a Deal ” is designed to involve young people and their parents in the search for accurate, well-researched data about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. The program uses the technology of the Internet as well as local resources to educate youth about the reality of drug abuse.
Northland students receive a questionnaire with identified websites. Answering and submitting the questionnaire enters students in local programs where the information they’ve gleaned is put to the test. Local winners go on to the final program where their newly gained expertise can earn them as much as $1,000. The finale of Northland “It's Time to Make a Deal ” has the excitement of a game show, with local experts and an emcee that keeps it light, fun and educational for both the participants and the audience.
