The Northland Coalition was formed in May 2000 to fulfill Community 2000 team member recommendations to collaborate efforts and resources in order to develop more comprehensive programs and greater media exposure. Strategies are designed to move the Northland Coalition toward their mission statement, “Through community involvement and sharing of resources, the Northland Coalition will develop programs and pursue environmental strategies that send a unified message that use by minors of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, or associated violence, is not acceptable.” With this mission in mind, and after examining individual Community 2000 team assessments and community, county, regional and state surveys, the Northland Coalition identified these top two concerns:
- Parent and social norms relay a message of acceptance of underage drinking
- Youth and adults lack accurate and up-to-date alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) information
Based on current survey data, two Risk Factors were identified as major contributors by Northland Coalition members and supported by every individual Community 2000 teams in the three-county area:
- Community laws and norms favorable to drug use
- Perceived availability of drugs.
The Northland Coalition has worked the last five years to formally organize themselves (they have received their not-for-profit and 501 (c) (3) statuses) and to develop strategies and offer trainings that strengthen their coalition as well as the 15 Community 2000 teams, Ray County Coalition and Youth with Vision.
